Swedish / Relaxation

One of the most commonly taught and well known massage techniques, Swedish massage is a vigorous system of treatment designed to energize the body to stimulate circulation. Five basic strokes, all flowing to the heart, are used to manipulate the soft tissues of the body. The disrobed client is covered by a sheet, with only the area being worked on exposed. Therapists use a combination of kneading, rolling, vibrational, percussive and tapping movements with the application of oil to reduce friction on the skin.

The many benefits of Swedish Massage may include generalized relaxation, dissolution of scar tissue adhesions and improved circulation, which may speed healing and reduce swelling from injury.

Deep Tissue

Deep Tissue Massage is one of the types of massage therapy commonly asked for in spa and clinical settings. This form of therapeutic massage is great for providing chronic pain relief by addressing pain in specific areas. It is commonly used on athletes. This type of therapeutic massage works the deeper layers of muscles. To get to these deeper layers, the therapist makes more use of forearms and elbows and massages more slowly.

The therapist may also use tools to get deeper pressure. The primary aim is to break up adhesions in the muscle tissue and like other forms of massage, increase the circulation and lymph flow to that area. Adhesions are areas where the muscle tissue is stuck together forming rigid bands of tissue or hardened lumps often referred to as knots in the muscle. These adhesions keep blood and lymph from circulating freely in the muscle causing the muscle tissue to be malnourished and waste to build up in the tissue. Cross-fiber friction often used in deep tissue massage helps loosen these stuck fibers. This type of massage is good for:

  • fibromyalgia
  • arthritis
  • tension headaches
  • muscle injuries
  • neck pain
  • back pain
  • chronic pain
  • general muscle tension

There is some level of discomfort or pain that you will feel during a session. You should always let the therapist know if you are feeling pain during the treatment. The therapist will sometimes instruct you in deep breathing to help you deal with discomfort. You may feel some soreness after the massage, but as the days go by you’ll notice that you are looser and feel better. Be sure to drink plenty of water after the massage.

Myofascial Release Technique

Myofascial release technique (MFR) is one of the gentle types of massage therapy that can provide you with great health benefits. MFR can be integrated with other types of massage or can provide a complete treatment on its own.

Fascia is a thin connective tissue that surrounds your muscles and organs. You can think of it as an uninterrupted web. It helps hold organs in place and helps them hold their shape. Fascia gives a lot of support to your body and when it is bound up it can cause dysfunction. Because it’s uninterrupted, if one section of your fascia is bound up it pulls on the rest of the fascia causing pain and dysfunction in organs and muscles.

Myofascial release techniques loosens bound areas of fascia by gently stretching them. The therapist does this by applying pressure and traction to the skin. When the releases are formed on you, you will usually feel a stretching sensation on your skin like a gentle tug. Sometimes the area will itch. Sometimes it will tingle or feel like a burn. These sensations are letting you know that blood is getting to the area.

MFR can be used to treat these conditions:

  • chronic pain
  • back pain
  • whiplash
  • fibromyalgia
  • carpal tunnel syndrome
  • vertigo
  • headaches
  • TMJ disorders
  • plantar fascitas
  • thoracic outlet syndrome

When you get MFR you’ll lay on a massage table partially clothed. Often no oil or lotion is used during this type of massage as the therapist needs to get traction on your skin. You will be asked to move around for this therapy. You’ll sometimes be asked to sit on the table or stand.

Neuro-Muscular

Neuro muscular therapists are extensively trained in the nervous system’s effects and skeletal systems. They also have a working knowledge of kinesiology and biomechanics. NMT therapists work to treat five main causes of pain.

  1. Trigger Points -irritable areas of muscle tissue that refer pain upon a predictable pattern.
  2. Nerve Entrapment/Compression -when nerves get trapped in bound up muscle tissue or compressed against bone.
  3. Postular Distortions – when the muscular system becomes unbalanced because of bad posture.
  4. Ischemia -when lack of blood supply to an area makes the cells very sensitive.
  5. Biomechanical Dysfunction – This is a direct result of doing a task repeatedly in an incorrect manner. It is associated with injuries such as tennis elbow and/or carpal tunnel syndrome.

After therapy you may feel some soreness. The soreness should go away within 24 hours. You may not notice much of a difference in the looseness of your muscles until as long as 14 hours after treatment. Neuro muscular massage is great for treating chronic pain disorder, correcting postular dysfunction and increasing range of motion.

Craniosacral

CST, sometimes called craniosacral therapy, is one of the gentlest forms of body work. This holistic therapy is so gentle it can be used to treat newborn infants. It is also an ideal alternative medicine treatment for the elderly. The brain and spinal cord are bathed in a fluid called cerebrospinal fluid. The fluid and the dura mater that contain it form the craniosacral system. This system has its own rhythm that is a result of the fluid being pumped around the spinal cord and brain.

The craniosacral rhythm is different from your heartbeat or breathing. The therapist is able to feel the rhythm of the craniosacral system by placing his or her hands lightly on various areas of your body. The feet and ankles, thighs, hips, rib cage, shoulders and head are all the key areas where your therapist will feel your rhythm. By checking these various points, your therapist can determine where your rhythm is irregular or weak.

The therapist then uses a light touch, no greater than the weight of a nickel, to release restrictions in the fascia around the craniosacral system.

In your skull there are sutures. We’re taught that as you become an adult, the bones in your skull fuse. In reality they are still moveable almost like joints. The therapist gently manipulates these bones to improve the flow of craniosacral fluids. Craniosacral therapy is not just used to treat neurological disorders. It can be used to treat:

  • fibromyalgia
  • headaches
  • chronic pain
  • stress temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ)
  • central nervous disorders
  • chronic fatigue

Prenatal

Pregnancy massage, also called prenatal massage, is a good way to relieve some of the aches and pains experienced during pregnancy. Pregnancy is hard on a woman’s body. The added weight and relaxing of the ligaments that occur during pregnancy is stressful on the joints, especially the pelvis. Carrying the baby causes the pelvis to tilt. This puts pressure on the lower back. There is also a lot of stress put on the neck, shoulders and upper back. Getting massage during pregnancy can:

  • decrease symptoms of depression
  • reduce anxiety
  • relieve muscle aches
  • lessen joint pains
  • regulate hormones
  • reduce swelling
  • improve labor outcomes
  • improve newborn health

Pregnancy massage can also relieve nerve pain. Sciatica and carpal tunnel syndrome sometimes occur during pregnancy. When you see a massage therapist, make sure you see someone who is certified in prenatal massage. That means that the therapist will have taken special classes about massaging pregnant woman. This is necessary because there are areas of the body that should be avoided during a prenatal massage. Pillows and cushions are used to make you comfortable on the massage table. The safest position for you to be worked on is lying on your side. You should discuss all details of your pregnancy with your therapist.

Reiki Healing – USUI SYSTEM

Reiki healing is a hands-on energy healing art. In a reiki healing session, the practitioner, trained to access and serve as a channel for the life-force (ki or chi), places hands on or just above the client’s body to activate healing energy within receptive points of the body. The practitioners hands move progressively with a passive touch through positions on the body, remaining in each position for three to five minutes. As a harmonic flow of energy is strengthened, within the client and practitioner, healing occurs through the return of physical, mental and spiritual balance.

Reflexology

Reflexology involves manipulation of specific areas of the foot, hands, and ears that correspond to others of the body. Sometimes referred to as zone therapy, this bodywork involves application of pressure to these reflex zones to stimulate body organs and relieve areas of congestion. Similar to accupressure principles, reflexology works with the body’s energy flow to stimulate self-healing and maintain balance in physical function. This technique is used to reduce pain, increase relaxation, and stimulate circulation of blood and lymphatic fluids. It is especially useful in stress-related illness and emotional disorders. Reflexology is also convenient in cases where an area of the body is traumatized or diseased to the extent that direct manipulation is not appropriate.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy massage is a wonderful stress relief massage. It’s a common way to administer healing therapeutic essential oils. This type of massage therapy relies on smooth, fluid effleurage strokes.

Aromatherapy is used to treat the following conditions:

  • digestive problems
  • headaches
  • fatigue
  • congestion
  • stress
  • anxiety
  • menstrual problems
  • hormone imbalances
  • sleeping disorders
  • chronic pain
  • skin conditions
  • slow metabolism

Hot Stone

Hot Stone massage uses heated basalt lava massage stones with traditional Swedish massage techniques to relieve muscular tension and melt away stress. It is a popular spa therapy. The stones are sanitized and heated in 120 and 150 degree water before the massage. The therapist places them on areas of the body to open meridians, loosen muscles and increase circulation.

They are usually left on you for about 20 minutes before the massage starts. Loosening the muscles with heat first makes it easier for the therapist to work deep muscle tissue. The therapist then uses the stones to massage you. The stones are never rough and with a bit of oil glide nicely across the skin. Sometimes cool stones are used to treat muscle injuries. This form of massage helps to sedate the nervous system, detoxify the body, increase lymph flow, and causes you to relax more deeply.

It can be used to treat a variety of conditions:

  • arthritis
  • fibromyalgia
  • depression
  • muscle aches
  • insomnia
  • back pain
  • anxiety
  • stress
  • circulation problems

Let your therapist know if the stones are too hot or the pressure is too deep during the massage.
